These are the single mothers of The Gambia, and their strength is as undeniable as it is under-appreciated.
Burdened But Not Broken:
These women carry the weight of their families on their heads, literally and figuratively. They navigate bustling markets, their heads crowned with towering baskets overflowing with goods. They toil tirelessly, from sunup to sundown, hawking wares, cleaning homes, or holding down multiple jobs. Yet, they rarely receive the encouragement or support they deserve.
A Culture of Neglect:
Many husbands in The Gambia abdicate their responsibilities, leaving the weight of financial burden and childcare solely on the shoulders of their wives. This often leads to isolation, abuse, and a desperate struggle for survival. Single mothers are ostracized by society, deemed somehow less than whole.
The Ripple Effect of Neglect:
The consequences of neglecting single mothers are far-reaching. Many street children come from single-parent households. Feeling ostracized and lacking guidance, these youngsters often see themselves as outcasts, resorting to “survival of the fittest” tactics.
